You get home from a long day at work and turn on the TV. It’s been a long week, so you think to yourself- maybe i’ll take the family to a movie on Saturday. Maybe we’ll even go on a vacation soon! We could visit museums and go to plays and see all sorts of fun attractions. When you turned the TV on, nothing happened. There are no actors to entertain you. When you went to the movie theater, nothing was showing. There were no advertisements to tell you that anything was showing, so you went to the theater to find out. Nothing playing. There is no one to film and create movies for you. Well at least your vacation will be fun, right? Not like there will be any plays to see and there won’t be anything in the art museums. Well at least you have the shack you are living in that you made out of cardboard and sheets. Not like you could find an architect to build you a house with all the money you’re making as an engineer.

I love how people always forget (or never know) that graphic design is a form of communication.
Where would we be without global or national symbols? Countries with 6 dominant languages would have to have 6 written plaques on each bathroom door to tell you which one to use. Traffic signs would be different in every state, requiring you to have to constantly try and figure out what signs are what. Nutrition and medicine labels would have no form, making it either frustratingly tedious or impossible to translate.
Design isn’t just “making things look pretty”. No. Designers have one of the, if not the most universally powerful voices in society. Designers decide what information is important, what is detrimental, what needs to be said first, second, and last. Without designers, all of your information would be organized in a giant block of unorganized text with no hierarchy. You could spend an hour reading through 30 pages of information just to figure out you need to take two of these pills before bedtime with a full glass of water.
Design is a powerful driving force in marketing. Design is literacy. Design is organization. In a slightly more sinister light, design is the art of pulling the puppet strings of our minds. Design dictates how we absorb information, when we absorb it, how to utilize it, and can steer our consciousness.
Without design, our world could look like this.
(Not that I don’t think Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff isn’t a masterpiece in itself and I love it more than socially acceptable, but you get the point.)

Top five things you can’t get a machine to do cheaper and better than a human:
art
art
art
art
art

performs a magnificent double bird flip, arms raised like a lord over men
fornicates with law enforcement
ollies out to planet fucking jupiter

notice how all of these are the arts. and how everyone of them belongs to at least 1 staff member for the today show…

the most useless major in my opinion? philosophy.
